HUSKIES BADMINTON HOSTS 37TH ANNUAL GBC KIM NG OPEN

Nationally ranked # 1 George Brown College played host to the 37th Annual George Brown College Kim Ng Open this past weekend (Dec 17 and 18). The tournament is named after Huskies coaching alumnus, Kim Ng, a three-time Provincial Coach of the Year in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA).

The tournament was held at the Casa Loma Athletic Centre and welcomed OCAA colleges, Huskies alumni, members from the George Brown community, as well competitive club players from the Toronto area.

This year the event saw more than 50 athletes compete in the five major disciplines; men/women singles, men/women doubles and mixed doubles.

Included in the field were 10 current George Brown student-athletes, and various alumnus including four-time OCAA badminton medalist, 2012 CCAA Silver Medalist and 2015 OCAA Hall of Fame inductee Dayvon Reid and Anh Hoang who played three years with the Huskies where she collected three CCAA medals including silver medals in 2018 and 2019 and the 2020 bronze medal. She also was named CCAA Academic All-Canadian three years in a row., along with all members of the George Brown badminton coaching staff. Unlike other OCAA tournaments, the GBC Kim Ng Open allows university and club players to compete which adds to the strength of competition.

Many of the varsity players who compete for George Brown return as alumni in events such as the Kim Ng Open to continue competing, which illustrates the strong familial bonds created and the rewarding experience of being a George Brown College student-athlete. That foundation started with Kim Ng, and continues to be strengthened with current Badminton head coach Will Schram.

The Kim Ng tournament is the last before the holiday break. The Huskies will return to action on January 13-14, 2023 when they travel to Centennial College for their OCAA Badminton Invitational.
