George Brown announce that Men's Volleyball coaches Sam Schachter and Luke Sim are stepping down from their leadership roles with the Huskies ahead of the 2024-25 season. Both coaches played a vital role in the program's significant strides over the past three seasons.
"We’re sad to see Sam and Luke both go, but we’re thrilled with the impact they both made on the program during their time here and the positive position they’ve put us in to continue to be successful moving forward," said Melanie Gerin-Lajoie, Manager of Athletics & Recreation. "And we wish Sam best of luck as he continues to challenge for another Olympic birth with the national beach team!".
Sam Schachter was named head coach of the team in April 2021. He had the difficult challenge of compiling a roster after a year hiatus due to COVID, but in his first season the team still went 3-5 and qualified for the playoffs. The following campaign, he took a step back from head coach to consultant in order to focus on his beach volleyball career with the hopes of qualifying for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.
"I had a wonderful experience at George Brown! The staff was always warm and helpful. They invited me into a positive and inclusive culture," Schachter explained. "It was my first experience in the head coach position at the college level - I learned a lot about building a program and how an organization can work together to ensure everyone has a memorable experience. I'm excited to see where the program goes and I'll continue to be part of the program, now cheering from the sidelines."
Sim was brought in as an assistant with Schachter ahead of the 2021-2022 campaign, and took over as interim head coach for 2023-24. After a season of growth, the program turned it around in a massive way. The Huskies improved their win total by eight from the previous season, ending with an impressive 11-7 record, securing fourth place in the division and hosting a crossover playoff match for the first time since 2018. Sim was named East Division Coach of the Year and was a nominee for George Brown Huskies Coach of the Year.
"My experience coaching with the George Brown Huskies was nothing short of exceptional. The program provided a highly professional atmosphere that allowed me to thrive as a coach. Every day was immensely fulfilling and rewarding, as I witnessed the growth and development of both the players and the team as a whole," Sim said. "Moreover, being surrounded by such amazing people, including dedicated athletes and supportive staff, made the journey even more enjoyable. Coaching with the Huskies was an experience I will always cherish, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a fantastic program."
The George Brown Huskies want to thank Luke and Sam for their fantastic work over the past three seasons.
