COCO SAUVE, MICHAEL WHELAN NAMED HUSKIES ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Michael Whelan (Men's Indoor Soccer)

George Brown men's indoor soccer opened 2019 with a perfect run to capture the Centennial Invitational, going 5-0 while outscoring opponents 13-2 to earn the season-opening title. 6'1" Mississauga native Michael Whelan was the catalyst, scoring three goals including a momentum shifter to tie things up in the championship game against UTM. "Michael played extremely hard all day, and made a real impact for us on both sides of the field," said Assistant Coach Richard Kirwan. The Huskies ran off three consecutive 3-0 wins over Georgian, Laurier Brantford and Conestoga in round-robin play before defeating Sheridan and UTM 2-1 in the semi-finals and finals.

Next up the Huskies will head to Hamilton for the Redeemer Invitational on Saturday, January 26.

Coco Sauve (Women's Basketball)

Despite the 9-2 Huskies women's basketball team suffering just their second loss of the season last week, third-year Vancouver native Coco Sauve put together a solid road performance against the Durham Lords. The 6'0" forward scored 13 points on 3-for-5 shooting from beyond the arc, adding five rebounds, a block and a helper in 22 minutes. It marked the seventh time this season that Sauve has hit double figures, and she provides crucial spacing as a big, shooting a red-hot 38.9% from beyond the arc on the season. Playing alongside Kiyann Grimaldo and guard/forward Tianna Sullivan, George Brown boasts one of the OCAA's scariest frontcourts on both sides of the ball.

The Huskies will look to bounce back on Friday night when they play host to Algonquin at Casa Loma, opening tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
