BEATRIZ VILCHES, VIVEK MATHIMAKKI NAMED HUSKIES ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Beatriz Vilches (Women's Volleyball)

Huskies women's volleyball came up with a massive home sweep over the weekend, defeating Algonquin and La Cite to get 2019 off to a quick start and improve to 5-7 on the season. First-year Husky Beatriz Vilches continues to assert herself among the OCAA's elite middles, and the 5'10" native of Cuba was crucial over the weekend. Vilches combined for 22 kills, five blocks and four service aces, including 16 kills on 43 attempts in Sunday's incredible comeback win from being down 2-0 to the Coyotes. Her contributions span much further than the stats sheet, as her presence in the middle consistently forces opponents into tough situations at the net and continues to be more and more of a difference maker. Alongside Tiana Samuel and Ashley Lau, the Huskies have an imposing set of frontcourt players.

The Huskies volleyball teams are next in action on Saturday, January 19 when they pay Canadore a visit.

Vivek Mathimakki (Men's Volleyball)

The 7-5 men's volleyball came tantalizingly close to sweeping this weekend, but wound up settling for a split with Algonquin and La Cite. Mathimakki was nothing short of spectacular, combining for 33 kills, 11 digs and 10 blocks in an incredible two-day display. He currently ranks first in the province in kills (153), total points (193) and total attacks (418), and is fifth in blocked shots (30). His play has undoubtedly thrust him into serious player of the year consideration. George Brown is currently tied points-wise with Algonquin and Seneca in an extremely tight east division, and Mathimakki's continued dominance will be critical as playoff time nears.
