Season preview soccer

The George Brown College Women’s Soccer team enter the 2023-24 season after an early exit from post-season play in 2022-23. The team fell to the Niagara Knights in their playoff crossover match.

In the Huskies 10 regular season games, George Brown scored 20 goals, averaging 2.00 goals per game and have a 1.50 goals against average. The team did not lose on the road during the regular season, going 3-0-2 in opponent’s quarters.

After Leslie Fitzpatrick’s resignation in the Spring for a move to the New York Red Bulls of the MLS, George Brown locked in new head coach Dave Kelly to take over the reigns. Kelly comes to the Huskies as the current head coach of the Simcoe County Rovers League 1 Ontario Women’s Team as well as several distinctions from overseas, including four seasons with the Blackpool FC women’s team in England where his club earned two promotions, won two league titles and two runner-up spots, as well as one league cup.

The recruiting class for 2023-24 holds some familiar names around the OCAA, with transfers Ashley Altamirano (Niagara College), Megan Morgado (Niagara College) and Ashley Osorio (Humber College) all joining the Husky ranks for another shot at a championship. The bolster a line-up that also includes returning 5th year captain Brianna Samuels-McLaughlin, Ruby Tureski (2nd Year), Anges Yung (2nd Year) and OCAA 1st Team All Star goalkeeper Victoria Broomer (2nd Year). The team also welcomes back former George Brown Huskies Athlete of the Year Jennifer Seguin (2nd Year).

Huskies Men’s Soccer finished the 2022-23 regular season with 7-2-1 record, tied for second overall in the East division. In their 10 games played, the Huskies scored a total of 29 goals averaging 2.90 goals-per-game with a 16.3 shots-per game average and a .178 shot percentage. They have a goal against average of only 1.04.

The season culminated with a bronze medal at the 2022 OCAA Men's Soccer Championships after a win against the Fanshawe Falcons. It marked third medal for George Brown in the previous six seasons, including a bronze medal in 2016-17 and a silver medal in 2021-22.

Going into 2023-24, the Huskies boast a strong core of returners headlined by captain and OCAA Defensive Player of the Year Mark Do Coito (3rd Year), former OCAA All-Star Jason Alvarado (4th Year), and striker Yonis Jama (4th Year). They are joined by NCAA transfer Adam Wood (California University of Pennsylvania) and USport transfer Daniel McIntosh (York University).
