The George Brown Huskies women's volleyball team is thrilled to announce the commitment of Mariah Altiman for the 2025-2026 season.
"As our program evolves into a highly competitive stream, we are increasingly looking for athletes who have the experience playing at the most demanding levels,” head coach Daphne Choi explained. “Mariah has a long history of competition with the London Sharks and represented Team Ontario at the 2023 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG). We have been on the look out for athletes who will immediately be able to contribute to the program from their first year, and Mariah's initiative and past are a perfect fit.”
The 5’10” middle has spent nearly a decade developing her game, playing in the Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA) for nine years and competing with the London Volleyball Club. She has also been a key contributor to multiple Indigenous teams, including 19U Team Niigaanii, which won silver at the 2024 Alberta Indigenous Games, and 19U Indigenous Team Ontario, which placed fourth at NAIG 2023. In 2022, she helped Team Ontario secure gold at the Ontario Indigenous Games.
Altiman is excited to join the Huskies and continue her volleyball journey
“My initial reaction when I officially became a Husky was quite emotional. I spent half my life playing this sport, while giving back to my community. This sport gave me many experiences with traveling and I'm so grateful for this opportunity to be able to further my skills as a player, while continuing my academics,” she explained.
Choi believes Altiman’s presence will bring valuable elements to the team.
"Mariah brings a positive and passionate energy to our squad, along with a strong physical presence at the net," said Choi. "In our early gym sessions with her, she has shown quick intuition, adaptability, and aggression at the net. She adjusts seamlessly to system changes, which speaks to her high-level experience."
When choosing where to commit, Altiman saw several standout qualities in George Brown College.
“My decision to commit to George Brown was influenced by the kind and encouraging environment. As I search for the best course for my future, I can't wait to play volleyball at the collegiate level and improve as a player,” she explained. “I also enjoy the chance to interact with a community that values diversity and inclusion because I am Indigenous. As the number of Indigenous athletes in the OCAA continues to grow, I'm honoured to be a part of a movement that emphasizes the value of representation and makes room for Indigenous athletes to succeed on and off the court.”
Altiman will enroll in the General Arts & Science program and is eager to make an impact both in the classroom and on the court.
“My plan is to be academically successful and will work hard to enhance my skills and demonstrate my commitment to the team dynamic by working hard, attending practices, and doing my very best to compete at the varsity level in the sport that I love,” she stated.
