The George Brown Huskies women's volleyball team is excited to welcome Mattea De Francesco for the 2024-25 season.
“I decided to commit to George Brown for their incredible social work program, the accommodations for different learning styles, and coach Daphne.”
The 5’4” libero is transferring from Georgian College, where she played two seasons with the women’s volleyball team. Over 32 matches with the Grizzlies, she averaged 1.12 digs per set. Seventh-year head coach Daphne Choi is eager to add a veteran defensive specialist to her roster.
"Mattea is at her core an athlete. In a very short amount of time we've been able to expand her abilities to contribute on the court, and she's stepped into a role where she can perform just about any skill we ask her to, and will do it wholeheartedly," Choi explained. "Her drive to improve herself is infectious, and we are seeing early wins with her ability to adapt to situations and step into challenging roles at any moment and perform."
She is enrolled in the Social Work program and is ready to push herself both on and off the court.
“On the court I aim to become a more versatile player. I also have big aspirations for our team to succeed. Off the court I aim the best the best student I can be and take what I’ve learned to become a social worker and advocate for human rights.” De Francesco explained.
Choi believes De Francesco is the perfect fit to continue to build the culture that's in place at George Brown.
"Our women's program has had several monumental seasons where we've solidified what our values and goals are. We are headed into this season more connected with each other and more proud of what we can accomplish as a team," Choi explained. "Mattea directly fits into that culture. She understands the importance of a team moving together, encouraging each other, and keeping each other accountable, and she's embraced that energy from the first time she stepped into our gym."
Her first game with the Huskies will be against her former team when George Brown hosts the Georgian Grizzlies to kick off the season on Friday, October 18th.
