The George Brown Huskies are excited to announce that Ian Morse is officially the head coach of the women’s basketball team.
"Ian made a very positive impact in his interim season. He stepped over from the Men's program with an incredibly sound foundation in his approach to coaching, and was able to get the players to buy-in right away to his systems," said Melanie Gerin-Lajoie, Manager of Athletics & Recreation. "While the win-loss record didn't necessarily reflect it on paper, this team was competitive in the majority of its games. So as we looked towards 2025-26 it only made sense for Ian to move to a permanent head coaching position and continue building on what he started, which already includes a strong recruiting class that will be announced shortly."
Morse was brought in last August as the interim head coach. He embraced the challefnge head-on and is eager to build on the foundation set this past season.
“I am excited,” Morse said. “This first year was a great learning experience. I've been really lucky throughout my coaching career to learn from some phenomenal coaches, Greg Francis, Michelle Belanger, and Jason Dawkins/Marlone Greene at GBC, so it was really rewarding to be able to put those lessons into practice.”
The Huskies finished the season 3-11, and falling in the first round of the playoffs. However, the team never quit, two losses went to overtime, while three other games were decided by seven points or fewer. Morse took away key lessons from the season that will help shape the program moving forward.
“The two biggest takeaways would be how important patience is, especially coming in as a new coach with a group of athletes. The other would be how important it is to have a hardworking and diverse staff that feels empowered to bring their ideas forward and challenge you to make sure you're always progressing in the right direction,” Morse explained.
With a full offseason to recruit and train, Morse is ready to build upon the culture he envisions for the program.
“Hardworking would be the biggest culture piece we want to build on. We really hung our hat on the defensive side of the ball this past season and a lot of that really just comes down to hard work and determination,” he explained. “I'm a big fan of the phrase "iron sharpens iron" so looking forward to having our training camp be highly competitive where all the ladies can push each other and compete to get better over the course of the season next year.”
