SEASON PREVIEW: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SEASON PREVIEW: WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Last season, the Women’s Basketball program improved from a 3-11 record to an 8-6 standing, clinching third place in the East Division and winning their first playoff game since 2020. The team looks to maintain their momentum as they open their regular season on the road against the Georgian Grizzlies on Friday, October 18th.

Coach’s Thought
Interim head coach Ian Morse believes that with the foundation in place, the team can take another step this season.

“With a core group of returners from a team that was third in the East last year, I expect us to compete at a high level versus every team we play. We'll have some ladies stepping into bigger roles this year, and I'm excited to see their growth from last season to this,” he explained.

Returning Players
Jordyn Dawkins, Guard
In her second season, she provided leadership and offence for the second unit, averaging 7.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and just under a steal per game. She finished the season ranked in the top three on the team in points, shooting percentage, and three-point percentage. Dawkins was the perfect spark plug off the bench, earning her the East Division Sixth Woman of the Year title and a Huskies Female Athlete of the Year award nominee.

Jaycelyn Valencia, Guard
Valencia is slated to start as the Huskies' point guard this season. Last season, she set career highs in points, assists, and steals. She really stepped up in the final three games of the regular season, averaging 10.6 points, four assists, three rebounds, and 2.6 steals per game. In the first round of the playoffs against Redeemer, she went 4-of-6 from deep for 13 points, adding eight rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Keep an eye on her to continue this upward trend.

Kayana Granger, Forward
Granger is a versatile forward that any coach would love to have. She can score, rebound, and defend, making her a vital component of the Huskies success. Last season, she averaged seven points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game.
