George Brown is pleased to announce the appointment of Ian Morse as head coach (interim), Women's Basketball.
A lead assistant with the George Brown Men's Basketball program since 2021, Morse brings over a decade of experience in both U Sports and the OCAA to now head the Huskies Women. He started his post-secondary coaching career as an assistant and recruiter with the University of Waterloo in 2013, followed by three seasons as the lead assistant coach for the University of Toronto Women's Basketball team under storied coach Michele Belanger. Morse also has experience in the OBA club system as a former U19 head coach, and is NCCP Level 3 certified.
"I'm extremely pleased to have Ian make the move to head up our women's program", said Melanie Gerin-Lajoie, Manager of Athletics & Recreation. "His length of experience in lead assistant positions in the post-secondary sector, his own time as a varsity athlete, as well as a background in student support and academic services couldn't fit our program any better this upcoming season."
As a player, Morse was a shooting guard at both Laurentian University and Cambrian College from 2008-12 from which he holds a degree in Communications and diploma in journalism, respectively.
He has been a lead assistant with the George Brown Men's Basketball program since 2021 and has helped the Huskies to two OCAA silver medals and two CCAA national championship appearances, including a national silver medal performance in 2023-24. In addition to his coaching experience, he also brings a background in student service, having worked in the education sector in tutoring, testing support, and advising.
"We're really looking forward to Ian getting settled in with the women, rounding out our recruiting for the season, and hitting the ground running to build on the success from last year", continued Gerin-Lajoie. "He has a great existing foundation with our returning student-athletes given the closeness of our men's and women's programs so can step right in and go, which is a huge benefit."
This past season, the team posted an 8-6 regular season record and finished third in the East Division. They went on to host and win a playoff game for the first time since 2020.
