It's not always about scoring the winning basket, recording the big play or winning the race.

Throughout the course of the academic year, George Brown athletes – in various sports – along with staff, students and others, have rallied around the cause of helping others.

From putting smiles on faces to helping out in the community, a variety of events were held to raise money and awareness to help those not as fortunate.

Just over $2,000.00 was raised in various fund-raisers, and the opportunity remains to dig deep, pitch in and offer some financial assistance. Yes, every bit counts.

It all started last August, a staff softball tournament – hosted by the Athletics and Recreation Department – raising $640.00 in the Pizza Pizza Smiles for Charity event. And just in case you were wondering, the Son's of Pitches (Facilities) team was the most charitable squad.

In October, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation was the big winner with $360.00 raised in the Volley for Cure event. The annual Huskies Holiday Party, back in December, raised $500.00 for families in George Brown's Adopt-A-Family project. The women's volleyball team raised the most money.

George Brown's Student Association, along with the Athletics Department, teamed to host the December Showdown collecting more than 100 pounds of food for the Student Association Food Bank.

And let's not forget the many George Brown students, those on varsity teams and involved in recreational programs, who were involved in many community events helping out in special ways.

The Children's Wish Foundation was the benefactor of the Pyjama Ball with $564.00 raised and the men's volleyball team, through a Twitter campaign, tacked on a $100.00 while the Huskies mascot contributed its pay cheque. - DG
