GEORGE BROWN ANNOUNCES VARSITY M.V.P. WINNERS

 

It's not an easy task picking a post-season Most Valuable Player – but it's something that has to be done.

George Brown now has 14 recipients of the prestigious award.

Student athletes were recognized during a gala ceremony marking the 45

Anne Sado, President of the College, and many senior administrators were at the event along with corporate sponsors and special guests Perdita Felicien, George Brown grad and Canadian Olympic Committee member Amy Williams, Gemini Award winner Brian Williams, Cabinet Ministers Bal Gosal and Michael Chan.

Elena Arevalo (Newmarket), a midfielder who played Outdoor and Indoor Women's Soccer, was the only double winner. Arevalo was a co-winner of the Indoor sport award with Kasey Aukstakalnis (Whitby), who played on defence. Both are studying Fitness and Health Promotion. The outdoor team finished with a 2-6-1 record while the indoor team went 1-2-0.

Vadim Halimov (

Sean Sweeney (Toronto), a former male athlete of the year and multiple award winner, was the Cross Country MVP. Sweeney, in addition to setting records at the George Brown Indoor Classic, is regarded as the top distance runner in the history of the College. He's in the Child and Youth Worker Program.

Badminton and Women's Basketball also had a difficult time picking a single winner.

Kent Cao (China) and Ogyen Dorjee (Nepal) shared the badminton MVP award. They placed fourth in the Men's Doubles competition at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association playoffs. Cao is studying Building Renovation Technology while Dorjee is a student in the

Aria Charles (Toronto) and Quichell Barriffe (Toronto) split the award for Women's Basketball. Charles, who also was the recipient of George Brown's top female athlete award, was a forward and won the MVP award for an un-precedent third time. Barriffe, a point guard, was the Huskies top scorer this season. Charles is in the Community Worker Program while Barriffe is in the Game Development Program. The Huskies, 6-10 on the season, lost their qualifying playoff game.

Baseball's MVP award went to Jamie Lennox (Whitby). A pitcher and outfielder, Lennox was also part of George Brown history and was instrumental in the Huskies, despite a 4-12 record, making the playoffs in the OCAA's inaugural season. Lennox is in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning Technology Program.

In Men's Volleyball, for the third time the award was given to Edwin Sheon (Toronto). An outside hitter, Sheon was captain of a team that went 13-5 and lost in the league playoffs. Studying in the

The MVP award for Women's Volleyball went to Brittney Gee (Vancouver), a left-side hitter who is studying Special Events Planning. The Huskies finished the season with a 7-11 record and missed the playoffs.

Justin Bettencourt (Toronto) won the Men's Outdoor Soccer MVP while Milad Kahani (Iran) received the same honour on the Men's Indoor squad. Bettencourt played defence and is studying in the Building Renovation Program while Kahani, a goalkeeper, is in Construction Management. The outdoor soccer team finished with a record of 2-5-1 while the indoor team went 1-1-1. – DG
