George Brown College's Varsity sports programs are not just about winning and losing – but about gaining an opportunity to learn outside of the traditional educational classroom.

Ed Mark, Manager of Athletics and Recreation at George Brown, was a guest on the Rogers Toronto TV show "Trending T.O. Sports", and he articulated on the variety of students from around the globe who attend College, opportunities to compete on a Varsity team and special events catered to the community.

"We use our strong reputation of academic programs to draw students so they can benefit from a great education and move on to solid careers," said Mark. "We get our athletes from those programs. It's not going out and recruiting athletes and slot them in to educational programs."

Mark joined a panel that consisted of Linda Stapleton, from Seneca, Michael Kopinak at Humber and Centennial's Paul Martin – all representing Colleges in Toronto.

The show was taped at the Rogers TV studios in North York and will be aired on Friday, December 19 at 7:00pm and repeated at 9:00pm on Saturday, December 20.

"Our coaches connect to the community and do their job in explaining to students about our views, our values and what it means to be a George Brown student," said Mark. "It's a tough market, lots of options for students, but those who come to George Brown do so because of a link to a specific field of study."

Mark also elaborated on recruiting, scholarship opportunities, securing coaches and a commitment to having student athletes give back to the community.

"Involvement with community groups and charities is very important to the George Brown Husky family," said Mark. "It's about our core values, social development for young people and compassion – giving back and supporting those in need." - DG
