HUSKIES BASKETBALL HOLIDAY RECAP

Over the holiday break the men and women’s basketball teams hosted exhibition games against College Jean-de-Brebeuf (men’s team) on Dec 28, the Mohawk Mountaineers on Jan 6 and the Fanshawe Falcons on Jan 7. The women would drop both their games while the men would go 2-1 in their games.


HOW IT HAPPENED – WBB vs MOW: In their first game against the visiting Mountaineers, the Huskies allowed 20 points in the first quarter while only scoring 11 of their own. In the second quarter, Mohawk continued to outscore the Huskies 18-10 to take a 38-21 lead into halftime. The lack of offensive production in the third quarter by the home side allowed the Mountaineers to take a comfortable 60-27 lead into the final frame. The Huskies would tie Mohawk in fourth quarter scoring 11 points, but the team would lose the game 71-38. Jordyn Dawkins (1st Year) finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, three steals and three assists. Ava Proskos (1st Year) would add eight points and four rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED - WBB vs FAN: In their second game against the Fanshawe Falcons the Huskies got out to a slow start in the first quarter only scoring six points while the Falcons converted on George Brown’s turnovers scoring 26 points. The Huskies would regroup in the second quarter outscoring 17-14 to enter halftime trailing 40-23. In the third quarter the Falcons outscored the Huskies 12-10 to take a 52-39 entering the fourth quarter. The Huskies would only add six more points in the fourth quarter while Fanshawe would score 14 to take the game 66-39. Jordyn Dawkins had another strong outing, scoring 15 points, eight rebounds and a steal. Samuelle Hakh (2nd Year) would add 12 points of her own in her return to George Brown.

Despite the tough exhibition losses, head Coach Omari Wiltshire (3rd Season) is still maintaining a positive outlook for his team “having veterans Thorin Pangan (2nd Year) and Samuelle Hakh (2nd Year) return is a big addition to the team as they bring some much needed experience to floor.” He continued, “it’s always good to play in exhibition games especially against teams we don’t normally get to play in the regular season.”


HOW IT HAPPENED – MBB vs MOW:
In the first quarter of the men’s game against Mohawk, the Huskies were outscored by the visitors 29-24. In the second quarter the Huskies would add another 20 to their tally while the Mountaineers added 24 to take a 53-44 lead into halftime. The Huskies came out in the second half playing a much stronger defensive game holding Mohawk to just 19 points while scoring 24 of their own to enter the final frame trailing 72-68. The fourth quarter treated fans to an exciting finish as both teams exchanged a flurry of points. The Huskies would battle back to tie the game at 95-95 and force overtime.

In the overtime quarter, the Mountaineers would outscore the Huskies 13-11 to take the game by a final score of 108-106. Robert Ocampo (5th Year) finished the game with 31 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Naseem Barry (2nd Year) added 17 points in 17 minutes and collected seven rebounds in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED - MBB vs FAN:
In the first quarter against the visiting Falcons the Huskies would allow the visitors to outscore them 23-18 to enter the second quarter trailing. George Brown would settle down in the second quarter outscoring Fanshawe 31-14 to take a 49-37 lead into halftime. In the third frame, the Huskies would turn the ball over 10 times allowing the Falcons to outscore them 15-13 cutting into entering the fourth quarter. The Huskies would only manage to score 19 points while Fanshawe would score 27. The visitors would run out of time as the Huskies would go to win the exhibition game by a final score of 81-79.

Robert Ocampo had another strong outing as he led George Brown in scoring with 17 points and grabbed five rebounds. Chris Fields (5th Year) and Jacob Masters (2nd Year) would both add 14 points to the victory.

Huskies assistant coach and former Huskies basketball player Teshayn Gayle knows the importance and value of playing exhibition games. “Playing teams that we don’t normally see in the regular season allows the team to experience what a playoff atmosphere feels like. And with the return of some of our team members to the lineup, it was important for us to pay attention to the details and get back into a rhythm before we make that playoff run.”

UP NEXT: The Huskies will travel to Barrie to play the Georgian Grizzlies on Friday January 13th. The women’s game will be played at 6 pm and the men tip-off at 8 pm.
