WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL SPLIT OTTAWA ROAD TRIP

George Brown Women's Volleyball were looking to extend their winning streak to three when they faced Algonquin College on Saturday November 12, 2022. The visiting Huskies (4-2) took the Wolves (4-3) to five sets, but could not get over the hump, dropping the contest by a final of 3-2 (25-22, 18-25, 18-25, 25-17, 6-15).

HOW IT HAPPENED – ALG: George Brown took the first set from the home team, narrowly edging out Algonquin by a set score of 25-22 to start the game. The Wolves bounced back however, claiming the next two sets by identical scores of 25-18 each to take a 2-1 lead.

But riding the hitting power of 1st Year standout Jaque Ronquillo, the Huskies rallied back to take the fourth set rather convincingly at 25-17. Ronquillo finished the evening with 23 points on 22 kills and a service ace. The American Sign Language and Deaf Studies major also collected 10 digs on the defensive side of the net.

But it did not prove to be enough, as in the fifth and deciding set Algonquin held the edge most of the way through and the Huskies had no final answer, dropping it 15-6. Taylor Grant (1st Year) and Crystal Nguyen (3rd Year) each also contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively, in the losing effort.

On the second day of the back-to-back road trip, George Brown then faced the La Cite Coyotes (1-5) on Sunday to try and get back into the win column.

HOW IT HAPPENED – LAC: The Huskies came hard out of the gates in the opening set on Sunday afternoon (Nov 13), taking it 25-14. Set two was much more closely contested however, with George Brown needing to connect on 14 of 30 kill attempts to come out on the winning end of it 25-22.

In the third, the Huskies went quiet. They only recorded two kills for the set, versus La Cite's eight. The Coyotes would take advantage of the draught in offence from the visitors and take the set 25-12.

But George Brown shook it off in the fourth and bounced back, winning the set by score of 25-17 to win the match by a final score of 3-1 (25-14, 25-22, 12-25, 25-17).

Jaque Ronquillo was once again the Huskies primary source of offence, finishing with 20 points on 19 of 37 kills. Brianne Lee had another solid outing setting up her teammates' offence, registering 33 assists on the afternoon while also collecting six digs.

NEXT UP: The third place Huskies will be back home on Friday November 18, 2022 when they host the Loyalist Lancers (2-3) at Casa Loma Campus at 6 pm. Can't make the game in person? Catch all the action live on our Huskies Livestream Channel!
