HUSKIES GET EDGED OUT BY SURGE ON GRAD NIGHT

#23 dribbles ball up court

In the final game of the regular season, the George Brown Huskies (3-11) hosted the St. Lawrence Surge on home court on Friday (Feb 17) where graduating Huskies were also celebrated. Unfortunately for the Huskies, they would fall to the Surge by a final score of 59-49 in favor of St. Lawrence. See full bios of the graduating athletes who were honored pre-game at the end of the article.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Huskies came out strong and composed, executing their offence and rebounding the ball well against an overall taller Surge squad. Behind an opening quarter five points on 2-3 shooting by graduating point-guard Minori Fukushi, George Brown came out ahead by a slim 17-16 advantage. St. Lawrence's Ella Doull put up eight points for the visitors in the frame.

In the second quarter the Surge pulled ahead as the Huskies had difficulty finding the bottom of the net, The Huskies were out-rebounded in the quarter 14-17 and shot only 28.6% from the field. St. Lawrence would hold a 33-26 lead into halftime.

And that distance was all the Surge needed to keep things out of reach for the home team throughout the second half. Even with final stats lines of 13 points, 6 steals, 4 rebounds and 3 assists from Fukushi, and 10 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks from Samuelle Hakh, the Huskies could not climb their way back into this one and were handed a final 59-49 loss.

UP NEXT: Although the regular season has come to a close, the Huskies season remains alive after qualifying for the final playoff crossover spot in the East (7th place East Division, 3-11). They will travel to Humber College (1st place West Division, 15-1) to face the Hawks on Saturday February 25.

Can't make it in person to cheer on the squad, catch the action on OCAA Live!

GRADUATING STUDENTS

George Brown College Athletics and Recreation would like to thank our graduating students for their commitment to the team over their Huskies careers. Our 2022-23 graduating Women's Basketball student-athletes are:

#23 Minori Fukushi

Minori Fukushi joined the Huskies Women's Basketball program ahead of the 2022-23 season after being scouted out in a local nearby gym, and made an instant impact on the floor. As a Husky, the point guard started in 10 of 13 games played where she averaged 9 pts, 5.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. As a creative and skilled ball handler, Fukushi is a player who could produce whatever the Huskies needed in the moment on the floor. But she could also produce on both ends, as evidenced by her average of 3 steals per game in addition to her offence.

Fukushi will be graduating from the Health Informatics program this April.
