SEASON PREVIEW: MEN’S BASEBALL

SEASON PREVIEW: MEN’S BASEBALL

Since Josh Appel was named head coach of the men’s baseball team in 2022, the program has been extremely competitive in the OCAA. Last season, they posted an 8-10 record, which was the second-best record in program history, and just missed out on the playoffs. Notably, five of their losses were by three runs or fewer.

They begin the season at home with a double-header against the Durham Lords on Friday, September 6th at 5pm to 7:15pm at Wishing Well Park.

Coach’s Quote
The Huskies have been busy this offseason recruiting 15 student-athletes with 10 returners. With the combination of a talented recruiting class and some key returning players, third-year head coach Appel thinks the team is ready to get back into the playoffs.

"The expectation is to come out and compete to win every game. We have proven that we can hang with any of our opponents in the league and we are confident that both our returners and new incoming players will continue to push the program forward. We can't wait to get things started," he explained.

Key Returning Players
Marcus Herback, Second Basemen
In Herback’s first season in the OCAA, he did not look out of place. Offensively, he was a force for the Huskies, leading the team with 16 RBIs, second on the team with 20 hits and five doubles, and third on the team with a .455 slugging percentage. Defensively, he was a vacuum and played all 18 games at second base. He was nominated for the Huskies Male Rookie of the Year for his impressive campaign.

Finlay Butler, Pitcher
The starting pitcher, now entering his third season with the Huskies, has established himself as a reliable arm in the OCAA. Last season, he ranked in the top 10 across multiple categories, placing first in complete games (three), fourth in strikeouts (26), and sixth in innings pitched (28.1).

Throughout his career at George Brown, Butler has made 12 appearances, including eight starts, totalling 48 innings pitched. He holds a 5.40 ERA with 59 strikeouts.

Noah Case, Infielder
From day one, he was one of the most effective players for the Huskies in his first year in the OCAA. He played in all 18 games last season, while his 18 hits, nine RBIs, 11 runs, three doubles, two triples, .451 OBP and .491 SLG ranked in the top four on the team.
